How could I be so stupid
After getting scammed, many people ask the question "how could I be so stupid". The answer is, you're not. Romance scammers learn how to play on people's emotions and especially their concern for others and many scammers get very, very good at it. After all, it's their job. It's what they do for a living every day and by talking to so many people they learn all the right things to say and also the right time to say them. Many scammers even take courses offered by the more professional scammers or are recruited and trained by very well organized scammer groups.
If you are a victim of a scammer whether it's financially, emotionally or both you will see by the comments people post on the scammer profiles we have listed and the topic pages that you are not alone. People from all walks of life fall victim to a romance scammer every single day and intelligence has absolutely nothing to do with it. Romance scammers are a huge, growing problem and if people don't know what to look for (the flags or signs of a romance scammer) and don't realized how bad the problem really is then how could anyone with a heart refer to a scam victim as "stupid". Not knowing something exists does not make a person stupid.
Anyone who refers to a victim of a scammer as being "stupid" really shows their ignorance and lack of compassion for others. Or maybe they just think they are so much smarter than everyone else and assume they know all of the details behind why someone got scammed when actually, they don't have a clue so kicking others when they are down must be a big boost to their already inflated egos.

I feel like such an idiot. The money was not much but buying into his lies about how he loved me angers me more than ever. He knew I was going through a rough time and to do what he did makes him the scum of the scum.

I have a Masters and think of myself as very intelligent. What can I say? I fell for his garbage hook, line and sinker. When I look back, I see all of the flags and signs I was probably aware of but ignored.
Intelligence vs Emotions
The majority of people we have talked to that have been scammed do not lack intelligence by any means. Many were very well educated and the only thing they did wrong was to let their emotions get the best of them.
Scammers know that if someone is given enough time to think about what they are doing, they would stop and realize that our military and most companies do not send people to foreign countries then tell them to "find their own way home" or if the guy's personal assistant can send me a check to cash why can't the assistant just cash it and wire the money themselves or one of the biggest things that is probably most overlooked or ignored, why is the money almost always to be sent to someone with a different name than who you have been talking to.

Try not to get so wrapped up in a picture of someone that you ignore inconsistencies, flags and warning signs
